This
has been one of our most demanding projects to date.
Here were a few of the problems, some before and after
pictures and how we were able to meet the challenges.
The problems:
When you look at the wood panels you see two different
colors. They are indeed different woods. The panel is
East Indian Satinwood and the trim is an engineered
veneer of Anigre. The original design called for the
panel to be slightly darker than the stiles and rails.
The stiles and rails were to "complement"
the panel. As you can see the stiles and rails are significantly
lighter than the panel. Originally they almost matched.
Secondly and more difficult to see the sheen on these
panels was very inconsistent, shiney and dull and very
dirty
The cause of the problem:
Ultra-violet light, the source of that light comes from
the unfiltered large glass windows in lobby.
Also the panels were poorly maintained using large amounts
of lemon oil both attracting dirt and dust and leaving
an uneven sheen.
The challenge:
Clean the panels, and color the stiles and rails to
match the panels. Do it in the high traffic lobby with
no odors and minimal impact on traffic.
The solution:
• Thoroughly
solvent clean the panels, stiles and rails.
• Apply
barrier coats
• Apply
a Low odor, UV resistant, custom colored, finish to
match the panels.
• Apply
a low odor, low architectural sheen finish, to match
the original intent.
Challenges faced once the project was started:
• The
level of contamination from furniture polishes was underestimated
but the barrier coats and new finish were custom manipulated
to compensate.
• It
was decided the panels had suffered from UV damage as
well but not to the severity of the stiles and rails,
so we applied some custom colored finish to the panel
as well.
• The
project scheduling was changed one-third of the way
through the project. The client wanted to shave one-third
off the end of the project.
Outcome:
All of the problems and challenges were met and or exceeded
without one complaint of odors for this large interior
restoration project.
